En el artículo “Alfabetización en Diseño, o el Diseño de Individuos de Postindustria”, Vargas y Briede reflexionan acerca del rol y la formación profesional de los diseñadores en el contexto actual. Advierten la necesidad de abrir una discusión acerca de la capacidad del Diseño para reinventarse en un contexto donde el determinismo tecnológico y el modelo crecentista se encuentran desbordados. Los autores cuestionan la formación tradicional de las escuelas de Diseño, y argumentan que hoy como nunca antes, la profesión se encuentra interpelada por cambios tecnológicos, económicos, sociales y ambientales. Para que el Diseño se proyecte efectivamente como la carrera del futuro –capaz de impulsar innovaciones sociales y tecnológicas a escala humana– sería necesario superar la adquisición de habilidades técnicas básicas y avanzar hacia una mayor participación ciudadana, marcadamente crítica y con valores democráticos y políticos. A juicio de los autores, esto requiere repensar la formación profesional y el rol del Diseño mismo en la sociedad.

In the article titled Design Literacy, or the Design of Postindustry Individuals, Vargas and Briede reflect on the role and professional training of designers in the current context. They argue that there is an urgent need to open a discussion about the capacity of Design to reinvent itself in a context where technological determinism and the growth model seem no longer to be working. The authors question the traditional training of Design schools, arguing that today as never before the profession is challenged by technological, economic, social, and environmental changes. In order for Design to be effectively projected as the career of the future – being capable of impelling social and technological innovations on a human scale – it would be necessary to overcome the acquisition of basic technical skills and move towards greater citizen participation, markedly critical, and with democratic and political values. The authors proposed that to facilitate this move, there is a need to rethink professional training and the role of Design in society.

Rodrigo Vargas Callegari, es licenciado en Diseño y titulado en Diseño de Productos en la Universidad de Valparaíso (1995), Magister en Diseño Estratégico en la Universidad de Valparaíso (2009) y Doctor en Sociología por la Universidad Alberto Hurtado de Santiago de Chile (2019)
Actualmente se desempeña como Profesor Titular en Diseño en la Universidad de Valparaíso, y en la Universidad del Desarrollo; también es investigador en el Centro de Estudios Prospectivos de la Universidad de Valparaíso.
Además es evaluador de proyectos de investigación en diseño, y participa como par evaluador de programas de pre y postgrado en procesos de acreditación.
Ha sido director de la Escuela de Diseño de la Universidad de Valparaíso, y director de la Unidad de Postgrados de la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Valparaíso.
Ha dictado charlas y conferencias en distintos centros académicos, seminarios y congresos, en Chile y en el exterior.
Rodrigo Vargas Callegari, has a degree in Design and a degree in Product Design from the University of Valparaíso (1995), a Master’s in Strategic Design from the University of Valparaíso (2009) and a PhD in Sociology from the Alberto Hurtado University of Santiago de Chile (2019 )
He currently works as a Professor in Design at the University of Valparaíso, and at the Universidad del Desarrollo; He is also a researcher at the Center for Prospective Studies of the University of Valparaíso.
He is also an evaluator of research projects in design, and participates as an evaluator of undergraduate and graduate programs in accreditation processes.
He has been director of the School of Design of the The University of Valparaíso, and director of the Postgraduate Unit of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Valparaíso.
He has given talks and conferences in different academic centres, seminars and conferences, in Chile and abroad.
