Design Literacy in Health and Technology Education

In the upcoming 31st Design Literacy International Network talk, Professor Arild Berg will discuss Design Literacy in Health and Technology Education. He will focus on how the concept of the Design Literacy has informed development of a new interdisciplinary master course in health and technology. The Faculty of Technology, Art and Design at Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) introduced this degree programme in 2023.

Arild will discus the concerns of the team around the high ideals when planning the planning programme and the practical realities at of implementing the programme. A specific focus will be on the role of design and design literacy when designers meet other professionals from occupational therapy, biomedicine, radiography, and artificial intelligence. Design thinking was used in the making of the courses and was also learning outcomes from the programme. User perspectives concerned both patients, health professionals and other participants related to a variety of topics in health and technology.

Arild will base his talk on a paper presented at the ‘Interdisciplinary Design Educations’  track of the Design Research Society’s (DRS) international conference 2021 Learn X Design. Engage with ideas of design literacy in the making of such a new interdisciplinary master course in health and technology established in 2023 at OsloMet – the high ideals and the practical realities.
