The final talk for the 2022 will be delivered by Nina Terrey. The talk title is Embedding Design literacy in organisations for impact. It is based on Nina’s PhD research which explored organisational practices around adopting design as a management practice in the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). At the time of the research project the ATO employed over 22,000 employees and is responsible for the administration of taxation and superannuation legislation. Nina argues that practices of the public servants employed as managers by ATO resembled managing by design approaches. Specifically, in her talk Nina will focus on the Chapter 5 in her PhD document (Terry, 2012).
Nina used Actor Network Theory (ANT) to analyse the interrelated processes between Human and Non Human Network Actors to better understand the practices (Cresswell, Worth & Sheikh, 2010), see Table 1.
For example, Table 2 illustrates the Interrelated relationships between Human and Non-Human Actors shaping the Strategic Conversations which drive overall organisational strategies.
By using the ANT, the non-human actors such as the mind maps have been treated as active “subjects” rather as passive objects (see Table 3).

Nina holds a PhD in Management by Design, and is an Adjunct Associate professor with the Australian Institute for Governance and Policy Analysis, Senior Lecturer with University of NSW, and distinguished fellow of the Australian and New Zealand School of Governance. In 2022 Nina was a visiting scholar at Parsons School of Design Strategies, in New York, NY, USA. Nina is a sought-after public speaker on design, innovation, gender equity and sustainable impact. Nina is a published author and is currently co-authoring a book with Harvard scholar on how to unlock complex issues that are gridlocked.
