In her article titled Design Literacy. A Participatory Design Experience with Low-Income Older Adults, Bastías uses the Design literacy as an analytical frame to explore participatory Design carried out to implement a social program for older adults. She suggests that literacy in Design would be a necessary component for the configuration of socially situated responses in the implementation of social policies and projects. She reasons that it would contribute to closing socio-economic and cultural gaps. The article provides a conceptual link between visual literacy and participatory Design and suggests that socially situated graphic interventions could have a positive effect on innovation processes in the public sector. By undertaking this work, she provides essential insights into the field of social innovation. Bastías resignifies the experience of subjects who participated in the research project as a journey that goes from assistance to cooperation, relativizing the verticality of the relationship between the expert designer and the recipient of a designer’s interventions. The author suggests that participatory Design could be considered a two-way literacy experience in Design, insofar as the designer learns from the user, and the user who participates in the co-creation process, learns about Design.
